| Filtrexx Channel Soxx are to be used in place of rip rap or other channel designs for moving water off site and avoidance of further slope erosion. Channel Soxx are normally seeded during the time of installation, which allows them to become part of the living landscape. However, in temporary situations, they make excellent protective channels that can be removed without heavy equipment.
Conditions where practice applies
Use Filtrexx Channel Soxx in place of rip rap for channels when concerned about maintenance of the rest of the slopes. In many cases, maintenance of the rip rap/grass zone is challenging and can be an area of concern for liability. Mowers picking up the stone rip rap or incurring damage is a hard variable to manage on construction sites once closure is completed. The Channel Soxx allow permanent vegetation, along with compost and mesh netting, to provide the conveyance for water for many years without the problems or costs associated with rip rap. This design is similar to ‘sod waterways’ commonly used in agricultural applications, except that the Filtrexx FilterSoxx offer additional reinforcement from the netting materials. Filtrexx Channel Soxx also allow less sediment discharge due to intimate ground contact and the depth of compost within the Channel Soxx system.
Design Criteria
Design limits - Filtrexx Channel Soxx are used to handle similar flows as those with rip rap or other tools. However, they are not for the bottoms of raging rivers or extremely rough waters. Typically, Channel Soxx are on 3:1 or steeper grades and should be worked into the slope stabilization plan via the engineer or architect.
Spacing see specifications. In general, Filtrexx Channel Soxx are placed edge to edge and will grow together if installed correctly. Proper installation will achieve a 12”{30cm} width per FilterSock installed. Depth should be about 3”{75mm}.
Orientation In general, the Filtrexx Channel Soxx should be installed with the edges of the top of the Channel being under the water flow. It is imperative to get the water flowing on top of the system at the top of the slope. Filtrexx Channel Soxx are installed using a special filling device that flattens the FilterSoxx into approximately 4”{10cm}deep x 12”{30cm}wide configurations (see CAD drawings).
Staking The ends of the Filtrexx Channel Soxx should be staked to hold the product in place. Additional stakes should be placed at a minimum of every 10 feet.{3m}
Planning considerations
Filtrexx Channel Soxx are a more aesthetically pleasing option than rip rap or other hard armour solution to conveyance channels. Channel Soxx are easily customizable to most contours and offer superior ground contact and protection over other forms of channel protection. Since the vegetation can be determined at the time of installation, naturalists should be consulted to determine what native, sustainable species should be considered for seed choices. In some cases, plugs or live stakes may be used and the Channel Soxx may be planted by hand.
