| Erosion Control In Niagara Falls
Project Profile: Queen Victoria Park Moraine Management Plan
Project Client: The Niagara Parks Commission (www.niagaraparks.com)
Project Location: Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Project Date: June 2003/May2004
Project Background: With the construction of a new billion dollar casino on the edge of the Niagara Moraine, the Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) needed to review the sloped area to allow for view and ensure the slope was properly stabilized, while maintaining its’ natural character. Landsource Organix Ltd. was invited to participate on the design team because of the unique nature of its’ erosion control service. EcoBlankets and EcoBerms were favored over all other more intrusive techniques employed because they are 100% organic processes. They also allowed the NPC to shave a substantial sum off their initial budget. In conjunction with the client, TSH & Associates and Gartner Lee Environmental Engineers, a native seed mix was agreed upon for injection into the EcoBlanket
Profile: Landsource Organix Ltd. began by installing a vegetated EcoBerm along the top of the slope to protect from any concentrated flow which may result from the construction site above as well as along the left side to protect from flow as a result of an adjoining swale.
After completing the EcoBerm, Landsource applied a compost blend with Microblend to fill any scars on the slope and finished off with an EcoBlanket application including a native seed mix.
Conclusion: The Niagara Parks Commission was thrilled with the results, no erosion occurred even after the following winter. The vegetation established quickly with wildflowers appearing in the first season after application. The project was completed in 2 stages with approximately 1.8 hectares of steeply sloped areas being successfully vegetated and stabilized.
